Nicola Thost of Germany pretty much schooled the rest of the women’s field in today’s pipe final at the Vans Triple Crown of Snowboarding, her second contest of the year. Big, floaty airs to fakie, and frontside 720s set her apart as one of the women who could really take advantage of the huge pipe. Here’s what she had to say after her third and final run in the finals.
What did you think of the pipe, have you ridden a pipe this big before?
“I haven’t ridden such a big pipe in a couple years. But it’s so good; I could ride a pipe like this everyday.”
Is there anything about a pipe like this that makes it more difficult to ride?
“It’s maybe more challenging because you have to take a lot of speed, it just takes courage. I like it because you can go as fast as you want and you still won’t fly out of the pipe into the flats.
“You could see everybody was going a hundred percent: perfect riding.”
What did you do to get ready for the early season contests?
“Nothing really, I haven’t been riding that much.”
