Another dreary and gray day at the 20th Annual U.S. Open today, as competitors fought through another round of fierce eliminations. Today the venue was halfpipe, which despite nasty weather held up well, as rider’s battled for a spot in Saturday’s Grand Finale final.

The vibe is solid here at the Open this year, and the riding has been top notch. Today’s pipe quarterfinal elims’ saw some serious riding; back¿to-back inverted combos, bionic amplitude, and heavy technical trickery.

To add fuel to the fire, Shaun Palmer, Bryan Iguchi, and Jeff Brushie rode in the event. Wait until you see those photos. Palmer, fourteen feet out, Guch, powering… The usual suspects made tomorrow’s cut: Daniel Franck, who hammered out no less than three 1080 spins in his runs. J.J. Thomas on fire. Travis Rice, unbelievable amplitude. Keir Dillon, killing. And Markku Koski making it look too easy, and one of his spins in the pipe registered in at 1260.

Tomorrow will bring the what could be the burliest halfpipe battle in years. Stay tuned for more coverage.
