According to the National Sporting Goods Association, snowboarding grew 4.6 percent in 2002, compared to growing 23 percent in 2001, and 31 percent in 2000.

The total number of snowboards in 2002 was 5.6-million participants, compared to 5.3-million participants in 2001.

Alpine skiing participation was down 3.4 percent, coming in at 7.4-million. Skateboarding was almost even at 9.7-million participants, an increase of 0.4%. Interestingly, the number one growing sport in the nation for 2002 was paintball, which grew 24.4 percent, and had 6.9-million participants. Second was water skiing, growing 18.4 percent, and weight lifting came in third, up 17.4 percent.

This information is contained in NSGA’s 2002 Sports Participation survey and is based on a sampling of 15,000 U.S. households. The survey is conducted for the National Sporting Goods Association by Ipsos-NPD, Uniondale, N.Y.
