VAIL, Colo.?April 5, 2004?Vail Mountain team rider Josh Malay passed away earlier this winter while snowboarding in Spain. In honor and loving memory of one of the best snowboarders to ride Vail Mountain, Vail will host the first annual ?Malay Day? Thursday April 15, 2004 at the Vail?s Golden Peak Terrain Park.
Malay Day is a chance for those who knew him and who were touched by his life to celebrate his memory in a way that Malay would appreciate ? a fun day of spring riding with all of his friends in Vail?s Terrain Park. Highlighting the day will be the ?Destroyer? contest to commemorate Malay?s goal to ?destroy the mountain and everything on it.?
The day kicks off at 10 a.m. with a Pipe Jam, followed by a Jump/Jib Jam at 12:30 p.m. One ?Destroyer? will be announced every 15 minutes and he/she will select their choice of snow/skate product items from the prize table. At the conclusion of both jams, the ?Best Overall Destroyer? will receive a special prize. There will also be munchies, music and giveaways throughout the day.
Participants can register for the contest between 8:30 ? 9:30 a.m. at the Golden Peak Lodge. Cost is $20 and all proceeds benefit the Malay Memorial Fund. The contest is open to all ages, genders and disciplines, but parents of those under 18 must be present at registration to sign waivers.
With determination to keep Josh Malay alive in our hearts and on Vail Mountain, this day is sponsored by Vail Mountain, Oakley, Santa Cruz, The Other Side snowboard shop and Transworld Snowboarding.
