LAKE WANAKA, New Zealand (May 5, 2011) – Treble Cone has announced an events calendar for the 2011 season designed to showcase the best of the ski area’s freeride terrain and includes a number of national events.
Once again the country’s top big mountain skiers will compete for the national title the legendary Motatapu Chutes for the finals of the North Face NZ Freeski Open on 12-16 September.
Earlier in the season, speed is your friend in the NZ Snowboard Banked Slalom that uses the mountain’s natural terrain features, racing at high speed down The Saddle’s natural superpipes on 29 July.
The popular BASE Triple Comp returns on 16 July highlighting the true diversity of Treble Cone’s terrain with its mix of banked slalom, freeride and off-piste downhill.
Treble Cone has long been renowned as alpine ski racing destination and this year it will host the Junior Interfield Slalom, the FIS Series GS and Slalom and Treble Cone Ski Masters GS. On 28 August -2 September Treble Cone will host students from throughout New Zealand at the NZ University Snow Games featuring parallel slalom, giant slalom and slopestyle.
Youngsters are also well looked after with TC Cat’s birthday celebrations on 21 July and the Mini Mountain competition during school holidays on 17 and 18 September.
The truly unique nature of winter in Wanaka comes into its own on 16 September with the Wanaka Ski/Sail Race that has competitors ski racing in the morning and sailing on the lake in the afternoon.
With a scheduled closing date of 2 October, Treble Cone will look to re-open for one day on 8 October for the annual local charity fundraising day. A chance to get those last turns in, the day also generates a significant charitable donation each year with locals and late-season visitors making the mots of the spring skiing
