Team Stoked Takes to the ING New York City Marathon
New York, NEW YORK (October 19, 2010)- For the third consecutive year, Stoked Mentoring will participate as a charity partner for the ING New York City Marathon, taking place on November 7th, 2010. After the success of their 2009 campaign, that raised more than $80,000, Stoked is forming Team Stoked, a group of proactive supporters, to ditch the snow and surf, and hit the pavement for the 26.2 mile race.
“Team Stoked is out there running to represent the Stoked approach to life, which is putting your best foot forward and going after your goals,” said Steve Larosiliere, Founder of Stoked. “Last year’s marathon was an amazing experience all around and the funds raised by Sal and crew provided a big boost to our organization. We were able to grow and serve more youth through our action sports and mentoring programs.”
Racing for Team Stoked are 20 influential action sports, entertainment, non-profit, and financial personalities, including Stoked Co-Founders Steve Larosiliere and Sal Masekela, professional snowboarders Keir Dillon and Tricia Byrnes, Okay!! Okay!! Principal, Luis Calderin, ShredUnion.com’s Mascha Van Tongeren, 72andSunny’s Michael Orenstein, among others. Each team member has pledged to raise more than $2,500 for Stoked, with all funds going directly to the support of Stoked’s funding and operational development.
Team Stoked is no stranger to the marathon scene. Since 2007, more than 60 athletes have raced or biked in support of Stoked, raising at least $125,000 for Stoked programs and development. Team Stoked personal fundraising campaigns have welcomed more than 2,000 donors in that time, helping to solidify members’ individual pledges to Stoked.
“Whether it’s through our Surf, Snow, and Skate programs or our Team Stoked campaign, Stoked is always looking to set a good example for our mentees,” said Steve Larosiliere. “We aim to show our kids that these goals are attainable and can be a lot of fun to pursue.”
Stoked uses their knowledge of action sports and skill-building to provide at-risk kids a new outlook on life and an opportunity to take part in the growing realm of action sports. From coast to coast, Stoked programs benefit high school youth by providing them with knowledge, experience, determination, and opportunity that might otherwise not be available to them.
Stoked, a non-profit organization, was founded on the belief that the courage and perseverance needed to learn action sports would be an ideal way to teach those life skills to youth in underserved communities. Stoked’s mission is to empower youth from underserved communities to achieve a more successful future by providing programs based in action sports culture that result in personal development, academic achievement, positive relationships, and a healthy lifestyle. Stoked receives its funding from individuals, corporations, grants, and special events annually. Founded in 2005 by Steve Larosiliere and Sal Masekela, the 501c3 organization operates in both New York and Los Angeles.
