Resorts Across the Country Gear Up For Special Week Dedicated to Getting Kids on Snow.
McLean, Virginia – January 2003 – Every woman is a “daughter” in the sixth annual “Take your Daughter to the Snow Week.” Thirty resorts across the country will participate in this winter’s on-snow festivities during the week of January 27 — February 2, 2003. The goal of the event is to get daughters, kids and families involved in snow sports. Many resorts will simultaneously celebrate a “kids” week, inviting all family members to take part.
Picabo Street, downhill extraordinaire, returns for the 4th year as national spokeswoman for Daughter/Kids Week. Street, whose credits include one Olympic gold, one silver, and two consecutive Overall World Cup titles, says, “I started skiing as a child in Idaho and am supportive of any program that brings more women and children to snow sports. I am thrilled to see the event has opened up to kids and will be promoted by a number of the resorts.”
Individual resorts are putting together their own programs, which vary from weekend activities to a week full of choices. A common denominator is a substantial discount (or 2 for price of 1) on lift and trail tickets for participating family members. In addition, individual resort programs may include any one or a combination of specials on food, equipment rentals, lessons, clinics, race courses, tubing and snowshoeing, plus some end-of-the-day events and more.
“Take your Daughter to the Snow Week” is a national snow industry grassroots event to promote girl’s and women’s participation in all snow sports, started by Snow Sports Association for Women (SSAW) six years ago. For 2003, many resorts have expanded the event to include kids as well as daughters. Snowlink.com, consumer website for SnowSports Industries America (SIA), is the promotional sponsor for the 2003 event, providing and maintaining daily updates on festivities. NSN, publishers of numerous city sports newspapers, and RSN, a national cable television and web network specializing in region-specific content for outdoor enthusiasts, return as promotional sponsors.
Nina Kemppel, four-time Olympian and nineteen-time national champion, extends a special invitation to Nordic skiers across the country to participate in this grass roots program designed to expose daughters and kids of all ages to cross country skiing. Nina is retired from international competition but dedicated to encouraging future Olympians to follow their dreams. She believes that Daughter/Kids Week is a perfect venue to expose newcomers to the sport of skiing. “Cross country skiing is my passion and I want everybody possible to share it with me,” stated Kemppel. “My parents started me on skis at a very early age and it was a great way for our family to enjoy both physical fitness and the outdoors.”
