Superpark Dachstein Closes Due to Glacial Retreat

According to a recent Instagram from Superpark Dachstein in Austria, it looks like the summer snowboarding hot spot will no longer be opening its doors for riding during the warm months. Citing glacial impact, the resort that has seen the likes of Marko Grilc, Anna Gasser, Max Zebe and countless others is the second major summer camp to shut down this year addressing shrinking snow packs in the goodbye letter.

Marko Grilc’s goodbye to Superpark Dachstein.

Owned by Planai-Hochwurzen-Bahnen, the park has been around for 15 years, opening in 2002 and serving Austria and a large portion of Europe to summer riding. Max Zebe, a european rider in the Burton Kilroy crew, had this to say on the park. “Superpark Dachstein felt like coming home to Italy from trips and eating a pizza. You know how many “Italian” pizzerias there are in the world, but none of those pizzas are even close to real Italian pizza?! Dachstein was the delicious and real one.”

Riders and industry heads have been commenting on social media thanking the park for the memories and hard work over the years. It is a huge bummer to watch another mecca of summer riding go, following Camp of Champions in Whistler from earlier this year, and it only cements the fact that we need to band together to make sure there is snow to ride for generations to come.

Full statement below.

In the last weeks there have been repeated rumors about the future of the Superpark Dachstein. Please notice the official statement of the park´s operator, the Planai-Hochwurzen-Bahnen: "After many great years of Superpark on the Dachstein glacier, we've heavy-heartedly decided that we will not rebuild Dachstein Superpark in the upcoming fall. One important reason is the increasing glacial retreat in the park area. It is definitely unjustifiable that we were already forced to damage the glacial ice sheet during the build-up. It's the dictate of the moment to preserve the glacial substance. We ask you to understand the justified criticism of environmentalists. We most cordially thank all our loyal guests. Needless to say, we will again put all our force and dedication into Superpark Planai. The regular ski operation will start in fall with the first onset of winter. The same holds true for the cross-country ski trail."
