‘For me it was one of the coolest contests ever. I can’t believe that I won. A bigthanks to everyone who made this event possible’. Steve Gruber knows what heis talking about as he is an athlete who works as a professional snowboarder formany years already. His biggest victories were the medal of the halfpipe viceworldchampion and the victory of the first Aesthetiker Waengl Taengl in 2003.
The repetition of his victory four years later was mainly because ‘… theatmosphere was fantastic. The level of riding was incredible because the ridersmotivated each other tremendously. On every good trick the riders at the startwere going crazy which motivated the next riders enormously’ so Steve.
In the finals Steve set a high level in his first run with cab 720, switch bs 540, bs720 and an extremely stylish move in the so called ‘taco’. All of this as knownfrom Steve with huge airtime and massive style. Competition came mainly fromthe Scandinavian side. On the kicker line the finish rider Jakko Ruha and KalleOhlsen from Sweden showed their impressive skills which unfortunatelyweren’t enough to battle the solid performance of Steve Gruber who wonherewith valuable TTR points, the biggest part of the US$ 30.000.- prize moneyand a Suzuki LT-Z400 Quad Bike.
Goal of the Aesthetiker events is to show snowboarding how it is lived and howit really is which means a riding versatility and creativity. Various possibilities to use the park were given to the riders. Besidesthe kicker line, a rail line, a cradle and a so called ‘taco’, an obstacle which cameout of the innovative Aesthetiker think tank, was there to be ridden. The riderswere asked herewith to show a varied riding which in the end placed SteveGruber in front of the two Scandinavians. This was a strong sign of life of theupcoming riders. Kalle Ohlsen proved after is second place at the Nashan Openin China and his 14th place at the Billabong World Junior Pro that his secondplace at the Aesthetiker Jam —Waengl Taengl would earn him a good place onthe TTR world ranking list.
