Exwire, a Lake Tahoe-based wireless Internet service provider, has installed the most expansive wireless network of its kind at a US ski resort at Squaw Valley USA. This new network will enable visitors to access the Internet from wireless (WiFi-enabled) laptops, PDAs and cell phones throughout the majority of the resort’s base area, and eventually all around the mountain.

Now there’s no need for avid skiers and snowboarders to call in sick to catch a powder day or extend a vacation a day longer – with Squaw’s wireless access, they can simply get online during lunch to check email or join a web conference with a Wi-Fi-enabled phone. Visitors can also look up the latest weather forecasts, grooming reports, activities and more with their wireless device at an area Hotspot.

Future expansion of service will allow skiers (or parents with children) carrying a PDA to see their friend’s location at the resort, send them voice or text messages, report emergencies, and receive advertisements, event information and specials.

Internet access is available through the Exwire network for $2.50 per hour, $8 per day, $21 per week, or $29 per month. Upon arriving at Squaw Valley USA, users can simply log on by choosing the Exwire network in their WiFi-enabled device and then launching their web browser.

Exwire wireless coverage area will soon be expanded to include nearly all of Squaw Valley USA’s base area, High Camp and the rest of Olympic Valley. Wireless networks courtesy of Exwire can also be accessed throughout parts of North Lake Tahoe, including neighborhoods in Tahoe City, Tahoe Donner, Northstar and Alpine Meadows. Exwire’s wireless Hotspot locations include the Tahoe Truckee Airport, Wild Cherries and the Holiday Inn Express in Truckee, and Syd’s Bagelry and Vicky’s Cyber Café in Tahoe City.
