LOS ANGELES, April 13 — Sport Chalet, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPCH), announced today that in 1999 the Company plans to open three new specialty sporting goods superstores in Southern California and to relocate a fourth to a newer and larger facility. These openings scheduled to be completed by the end of 1999 will bring the Company’s total to twenty-two sporting goods superstores in So. California. The Company’s stores feature broad assortments of nationally recognized brand name equipment, apparel, and footwear in all key categories including snowboarding, skiing, climbing, camping, diving, running, racquet sports, fishing, team, fitness, cycling, and water sports. In addition, the stores offer the Sport Chalet advantage of providing technical services and advice to customers.

Long Beach, CA. The first scheduled opening is in the Long Beach Towne Center on the 605 freeway at Carson Street. This 82 acre center consists of 843,000 square feet of retail, and is slated to feature a strong line-up of co-tenants including Lowe’s, Sam’s Club, Barnes and Noble, Michael’s, Staples, Linens ‘N’ Things, Ross, Old Navy, and Edwards Theaters. The store is scheduled to open this summer.

Porter Ranch, CA. The second scheduled opening is in the West San Fernando Valley in the Porter Ranch Town Center on the 118 Freeway at Winnetka Avenue. The 53-acre center will comprise 556,570 square feet of retail and is slated to include Toys “R” Us, Best Buy, and Wal-Mart, along with numerous specialty retailers and restaurants. The store is also scheduled to open this summer.

Temecula, CA. The third scheduled opening is in one of California’s fastest growing cities, Temecula, in Southwestern Riverside County. The store is to be located in The Commons at Temecula at the intersection of Winchester and Margarita Road, just off Interstate 15, and is planned to open this winter. Other tenants in the center are slated to include Circuit City, Petco, Linens ‘N’ Things, Office Depot, and Party City.

La Jolla, CA. The relocation and combination of two existing storefronts in the University Town Center in La Jolla, to one larger store within the center, is scheduled to occur in the fall. The new store will occupy almost twice the current floor space of the two existing storefronts, to allow for more efficient operations, increased merchandise assortments, and more convenient customer access.
