New Snow Provides Solid Start to South American Winter
As the last patches of snow melt into summer oblivion in North America, Chile and Argentina are enjoying a hearty kickoff to their winter season. El Nino has seemingly blasted into effect and Mother Nature has dumped a nice bit of snow across several key South American resorts.
Check out the recent snow totals below and view the froth-worthy pow pics in the gallery above. This recent snowfall seems promising for a solid summer shred season in the Southern Hemisphere.
Recent Snow Totals in South America
International Passes, Los Libertadores and Los Pehuenches: 9+ Feet
The big winner of this week’s South American storm cycle was Paso Internacional Los Libertadores and Los Pehuneches, which reportedly received over nine feet of fluff within the last week. This mountain pass is in the Andes between Argentina and Chile and is just three miles away from Ski Portillo in Chile. The snow totals as reported by Unidad de Pasos Fronterizos, a Chilean Government agency, may be a bit skewed and indicative blown-in snow totals, but that’s still a boatload of snow and we’re stoked to see things piling up.
Ski Portillo, Chile: 75+ Inches
As of Tuesday, Ski Portillo Chile reported 78 inches of snow in the past week and will now open on July 18th. “Over the last seven days we received six and a half feet of snow, and half of that came in the last 48 hours,” said Ski Portillo in a recent press release. Um, we’ll take it.
Las Lenas, Argentina: 45+ Inches
The legendary Las Lenas Resort in Argentina received more than 45 inches at the base from the most recent storm and even more fluff fell near the top of the mountain. The resort is now open for proper pow shredding.
Valle Nevado, Chile: 31+ Inches
Valle Nevado in Chile is reporting over 31 inches from the storm and have plans to open on Wednesday, July 15th.
La Parva, Chile: 28+ Inches
La Parva Chile received over 28 inches of pow and is now open to the public. The resort posted their new snow totals and this cautionary message on their Facebook Page on Tuesday: “Important! Mandatory use of chains. It is forbidden to ski out of the tracks open, the amount of snow makes it extremely dangerous.”
El Colorado, Chile: 25+ Inches
The Chilean Resort, El Colorado, bagged 25 inches of delicious pow and are now open for the winter season. All the lower runs are open with more top runs opening up throughout the week.
Cerro Catedral: 15 centimeters
Despite having some gnarly mud-slides earlier this year, Cerro Catedral near Bariloche, Argentina is open for business and blowing as much as snow as possible. It’s game on in South America. Photo: David Toledo
Check out this tasty edit from last summer at SASS Global Travel at Cerro Catedral in Argentina. Yes, this makes us hungry for that sweet, sweet pow. It’s time to pack up and get the heck out of Hood and make our way to the Southern Hemi. Whose coming with us?
