Whistler, BC ¿ The organizing committee of the Sims Invitational World Snowboarding Championship, to be held in Whistler, April 20-23, 2000, has announced event format details, athlete selection process and prize money breakdown.

Over the four days of championship action, the best athletes in the world will compete for $230,000 USD, the largest prize purse in North America. Blackcomb Mountain will provide the world-class setting for the Super Pipe, Boardercross’ and Slopestyle courses. The event will peak on the evening of Saturday, April 22 when thousands will gather for the kinetic action and entertainment of the Big Air competition in the Whistler Village that will include a feature performance from the a top US band (announcement pending).

The World Snowboarding Championship “Style Council”, a 12-person advisory board comprised of a diverse cross-section of riders and industry veterans has appointed an Athlete Selection Committee (a cross-industry panel comprised of Tom Sims, Dano Pendygrass, Barry Dugan, Rob Morrow, with further appointments forthcoming). The Athlete Selection Committee will invite the primary field of riders based on 1999/2000 results from the world’s most important events including: Innsbruck Air & Style, US Open, Vans Triple Crown, Westbeach Classic, Swatch Boardercross® World Tour, US Grand Prix, X-Games, Gravity Games, and current world rankings.

A limited number of “Wild Card” start positions will be voted for by the Athlete Selection Committee following the nominations put forth by the Style Council. The Super Pipe field will also be extended to include a 20 man, 10 woman pre-qualifier to fill 4 men and 2 women start positions for the Super Pipe jam competition.

Athletes and team managers may submit requests for invitation immediately up to February 28 and the selection committee will announce the invitational list on March 21. Under the direction of the event’s Style Council the event will be managed in partnership by Sims and Resort Communications Group. The World Snowboarding Championship will also be co-developed and executed by snowboard event management veterans, The Masters Group and Peak Productions.

The Sims Invitational World Snowboarding Championship will take centre stage at the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival, April 14¿23, 2000.
