Shaun White Brings Air & Style to LA

Air & Style Snowboard Event To Be Held At Los Angeles’s Rose Bowl In February

When Shaun White became the Majority Shareholder of GmbH’s Air & Style it was clear he had something planned for the future of the event. Recently he announced some important changes to Air & Style, one of the most significant being that in addition to venues in Europe and China the event will be hosted in Los Angeles California at the legendary Rose Bowl. Other changes to the structure of Air & Style, one of snowboardings oldest competitions at twenty years this year, include turning it partly into a music festival, and also adding skiing.  The event will take place in L.A. on Feb. 21-22, 2015 and is already generating attention from the mainstream media. White seems excited to be bringing snowboarding to the area he grew up in, Southern California.

White does not plan on competing in Air & Style now that he owns it, citing that as the owner, winning or losing the event has it’s disadvantages. However he does plan on performing with his band Bad Things, who just came off a tour with Phantogram, also scheduled to preform during the live music segment of the event.

The most significant change White has made to Air & Style is the introduction of professional skiing to the event. Air & Style had it’s debut in 1994, and since has seen champions the likes of Travis Rice and Terje Haakonsen, not to mention White himself. Traditionally Air & Style has been strictly snowboarding but White sees things differently, “When snowboarding got started it was the other way around and we had to fight our way in. Now that we[snowboarders] own events, I’m proud to be bridging the gap and bringing skiers in. I have friends who do both, and it’s clearly bigger than this sport versus that sport.” He said in an ESPN interview on the Xgames website.

Some controversy also surrounds the choice to bring the event, which requires significant amounts of snow, to Southern California. Though many are excited, some Californians voiced concern via the Xgames Facebook about the amount of water usage for such an event. The shaved ice used to create the snow for the artificial slope has to come from somewhere and given the current state of drought in CA, citizens are wondering where, and how it may impact the rest of the city.

Be sure to stay tuned for updates on the Air & Style event which will be taking place on Feb. 21-22, 2015 at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles California.
