Scotty Graham Memorial Fund Takes Place Feb. 24
One never expects to outlive one’s child, but it does happen. What may evolve from such a tragedy can, unbelievably, become a very potent healing tool. With deep love, strong commitment, and unshakable belief that something good can emerge from the worst of situations, our family has committed to making lemonade from the lemons we have been handed. That said, we proudly introduce you to the Scotty Graham Memorial Fund.
Scott Edward Max Graham, in whose honor the SCOTTY GRAHAM MEMORIAL FUND has been established, was a world class extreme skier and competitor. A real webfoot born in Salem OR, he was a beloved son and brother and the epitome of loyalty to his friends. He lost his life in a tragic automobile accident December 20, 1997.
This FUND is a labor of love to pay tribute to the son, brother and friend that Scotty Graham was. We are about perpetuation of his name and memory with our focus on Good Works. The Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization, is volunteer-operated, and more specifically focused on winter sports.
The SCOTTY GRAHAM MEMORIAL FUND was started by friends and formed by the Kinney-Conner-Graham family to continue the activities and goals of Scott Edward Max Graham.
The FUND’S primary purpose is to grant assistance to promising and dedicated young athletes, 14 through 19 years of age, who are in need of financial aid and support for the achievement and continuation of their competitive skills and goals in skiing and snowboarding. Scholarship assistance for career goals is also considered for prior recipients entering college or training in winter sports-related fields, who are still in their 19th year of age. Support decisions are based upon individual talent, sincerity, dedication and, of course, financial need.
On February 24, 2001, Mt. Hood SkiBowl (Government Camp, Oregon) will host the Annual “Scotty Graham Memorial Extreme Competition.” This competition, for advanced and expert amateur freestyle skiers and snowboarders, is held on Scotty’s Way, so named in tribute. This event is our major fundraiser and prepared to handle up to 75 participants.
At present we are negotiating a boarder/skier cross at Oregon’s Mt. Bachelor. This fundraising event may possibly be held in the spring of 2001. Our goal is an eventual series. In two short years, four scholarships for college and training have been given out. Eight teenagers have received grants of snowboarding equipment and gear to pursue their sport. The Board of Directors and Advisory Board are proud to have exceeded our original goal of assisting 10 teenagers in a three-year period.
If you’re a teen and want to request grant assistance, you must reside in the states of Oregon or Washington. Requests for the 2001-2002 school year may be made by letter or e-mail. Applications will be accepted after April 1, 2001, but no later than October 15.
Companies or organizations interested in sponsoring a teen or the events may contact the foundation to receive a sponsorship package. Please view this website for further information. http://community.oregonlive.com/cc/scottyfund
