DULUTH, Minn. (Feb. 15) – The third leg of the five-stop Chevrolet Revolution Tour gears up at Minnesota’s Spirit Mountain tomorrow and runs through Sunday with some of the best amateur riders in the country competing in snowboardcross, halfpipe and slopestyle.
“We’re looking forward to another great event at Spirit, they hosted the Revolution Tour last year and did a great job,” said U.S. Snowboarding Program Manager Abbi Nyberg. “They have an amazing staff and the Midwest hospitality really stands out.”
Before making the jump to the big leagues and a move to Mammoth Mountain, CA, pro riders Mason and Molly Aguirre cut their teeth at Spirit and both were in town last weekend for some park session time. Additionally, double Olympic silver medalist Danny Kass has been on scene this month filming for his next DVD release, adding to the reputation of Spirit as a premier Midwest mountain and a perfect host for the Revolution Tour.
Spirit is also the last stop for riders to earn starting spots in the US Open, set for March 12-18 at Stratton, VT and the State Farm U.S. Snowboard Cup, the lone U.S. World Cup snowboarding stop scheduled for the following weekend in Lake Placid, NY.
As the pipeline to the pro tours, including the Chevrolet U.S. Snowboard Grand Prix – the Olympic qualifying series – the Revolution tour boasts a total cash purse of $10,000 and is a two-star event on the Ticket to Ride World Snowboard Tour (TTR), the largest culmination of independent freestyle events across the globe. Top finishers will also receive an invitation to U.S. Snowboarding’s Project Gold, an opportunity to train with U.S. Snowboarding at their annual summer camp at Mt. Hood, OR.
Originally scheduled to open the Revolution Tour, the Spirit Mountain stop was postponed while better snow conditions developed. They have, and SBX is ready to kick it off on Friday followed by halfpipe Saturday and slopestyle on Sunday. Also slated for Spirit Mountain is a Junior Jam for both halfpipe and slopestyle.
