3rd Rail Jam Crowns Season’s First MC of the Snow at Mountain Creek

Rising hip-hop artists hit the snow last weekend for the season’s first Battle Below Zero, an amateur emcee
competition and a vibrant component of the 3rd Rail Jam series. While eight
artists brought their best to the Vernon, N.J. slopestyle event, it was
Baltimore’s A-Class that took home the title. A-Class also earned the honor
of opening for the iconic rapper Slick Rick Saturday evening at the
post-competition concert.

The Battle Below Zero is one of the first on-snow mic battles and plays an
integral role in the 3rd Rail Jam, which burst onto the winter competition
circuit two years ago and has been cultivating a new niche in the snow-sport
culture. The grassroots-with-an-urban-edge series continues Jan. 23 at Beech
Mountain in Beech Mountain, N.C. followed by a Feb. 6 jam at Raging Buffalo
in Algonquin, Ill., then Feb. 13 at Brighton Resort in Brighton, Utah and
wrapping up March 6 at Mountain High in Wrightwood, Calif. Battle Below Zero
competitions will take place at each event.

The Battle Below Zero has pushed its past winners into the limelight. Last
year’s two-time winner (at the New Jersey and North Carolina tour stops),
Kay-M, went on to open for Jay Z. Born in South Korea and raised in
Maryland, A-Class has been dominating emcee battles across the East Coast
since 2005.

Series founders Timmy Grins and Pat Hession have brought the streets and the
slopes together with events featuring music, graffiti and fashion. Each
evening on the 3rd Rail Tour culminates with a performance by
Grammy-nominated rapper Slick Rick, at the pulsating after-party. Originally
from the U.K., the Grammy-nominated rapper, Slick Rick, set the tunes for
Snoop Dogg who covered Rick’s hit song, “La-Di-Da-Di,” and is popularly
known for his song, “Children’s Story,” often heard on the dance floors of
many night clubs, in addition to his role in Jay-Z’s, “Girls, Girls, Girls.”

The freestyle Battle Below Zero competition takes place at the mountain-base
area and is open to all amateur emcees. Eight competitors will be
pre-selected to ensure a quality performance.

3rd Rail has partnered with Slacker, a personal radio station, to turn out
and turn up the freshest beats. DJ Image has worked to compile 1,000 of his
favorite songs from his own collection to create 3rd Rail’s own station,
www.Slacker.com/3rdrailjams. From A Tribe Called Quest to Wu-Tang Clan,
songs play continuously.

In addition to Battle Below Zero competition, the 3rd Rail Jam tour brings
aspiring amateur riders to resorts nationwide for a rail jam competition and
also live painting by some of the most notorious graffiti crews in North
America. Up to 150 riders per stop will take part competing for cash prizes
and a limited edition Launch Snowboard designed by graffiti legend Pose2.
The rail jam is open to three divisions- 14 and under, all girls, best of
breed and skiers. Under Armour, Skull Candy, Turbine, and Kangol represent
to show everyone the finest from their new lines and giveaway product to
lucky attendees. For more information, or to register for the 3rd Rail
