Park City, Utah – Want to feel like an Olympian? Visit Park City MountainResort and ride the Eagle Race Arena Super ‘Pipe, the official venue of themen’s and women’s halfpipe competition of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
“The Super ‘Pipe has taller decks, a wider transition and overall longerlength than traditional halfpipes, and the halfpipe used in the 1998 NaganoWinter Olympic Games,” said Jeff Frost, snowboard and events manager at ParkCity Mountain Resort.
The Super ‘Pipe is 522 feet long, 55 feet wide, has 17-feet-tall decks, aconsistent 17-degree pitch and is constructed of approximately 500,000square feet of snow. Compared to the specs of a traditional halfpipe – 400feet long, 35 feet wide, and 15 foot decks – the Super ‘Pipe is a monster.
“The International Ski Federation (FIS, governing body of snowboarding andskiing) approved an overall bigger halfpipe for the 2002 Olympic WinterGames based on rider feedback,” Frost said. “The Super ‘Pipe is both saferand allows riders to perform bigger tricks.”
The new halfpipe is cut and groomed with a cutting implement designed bySnow Turbo and a grooming machine by Bombardier — both provided to ParkCity Mountain Resort through an agreement with the Salt Lake OrganizingCommittee.
The halfpipe competition portion of Park City Mountain Resort’s finalOlympic test event, the Nokia Snowboard FIS “Countdown to Gold,” will beheld at the Super ‘Pipe on March 1, 2001. Following this event, the ‘pipewill be filled in to accommodate the second half of the “Countdown to Gold”- a snowboarding parallel giant slalom race on March 4, 2001. These WorldCup events follow the same sequence slated to occur during the Olympicsnowboard competition in 2002.
