Northstar-at-Tahoe has set out to raise $15,000 for the Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC) organization with its ambitious Board-a-thon event on March 19, 2005, which allows guests to support the cause through many different avenues, including a silent auction, rail jam competitions and purchases at the resort the day of the event.
Founded by professional snowboarders Tina Basich and Shannon Dunn in 1996, Boarding for Breast Cancer’s mission is to teach young women the importance of early breast cancer detection and the value of a healthy lifestyle. A large component of the B4BC event at Northstar is the educational booths that will educate guests on breast cancer awareness, healthy lifestyle and the importance of early detection.
Along with education, B4BC will be supporting active lifestyle through its Board-a-thon, where riders can log onto B4BC.org and donate funds to receive great prizes. The top three fund-raisers will receive a complimentary Double Whammy season pass for the 2005/06 winter season, two free lift tickets on event day and a B4BC T-shirt. Other fund-raisers can win lift tickets, Northstar gift cards and T-shirts, depending on the amount of money they raise. Fund-raisers can donate individually or as a group.
Guests have other opportunities to raise funds by purchasing pink B4BC bracelets at the ticket windows for $2, purchasing food and beverage items with a pink ribbon next to them on the menu, or buying B4BC stickers and T-shirts in the retail shop or the vendor area the day of the event. For those who would rather pick up vacation packages, rounds of golf, spa treatments or a Burton snowboard, Northstar-at-Tahoe will host a silent auction from noon to 3 p.m., with 100 percent of proceeds going to B4BC.
Guests who want to take a more active approach can participate in the Northstar-at-Tahoe Freestyle Series. The entry fee is $20 or a donation to B4BC and competitors of all ages and abilities are encouraged to participate. Participants can register at the Base Camp Pavilion from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the rail jam begins at the base of the Superpipe at 1 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the best trick, the best chick, best youngster and overall winner.
From noon to 2 p.m., live music will be provided at mid-mountain and at 3:30 p.m., guests can follow the sound down to the Village Plaza, for live music provided by the Jeff Jones band. Jeff’s rock and blues sound is influenced by Ben Harper, Chris Whitley, Jack Johnson, Stevie Ray Vaughn, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, the Black Crowes, and others. A portion of the bar revenue will be donated to B4BC.
There is no lift ticket required to attend B4BC, as Northstar-at-Tahoe will offer complimentary gondola access to the vendor/expo area and concert venue at mid-mountain.
After a full day on the slopes, head to the B4BC after party at the Blue Coyote in Truckee. For a $15 admission fee, guests will receive goodies including recent snowboard films by Mack Dawg, Poor Boyz and Standard Films, along with drink discounts. Those wearing a B4BC bracelet will receive $5 off the entry fee. A 2005/06 Northstar-at-Tahoe value season pass, snowboards, helmets, clothing and more will be raffled off. All raffle proceeds, entry fees and $1 off every drink sold will be donated to the Boarding for Breast Cancer fund.
