Olympic athlete and X Games big-air snowboard champion Barrett Christy becomes the first athlete ever to have a Nike All Conditions Gear (ACG), signature shoe line designed after her. With the introduction of the Air Barrett Christy, Nike ACG debuts its new line of “Outdoor Cross-Training” products, designed to reach the growing number of young consumers with diverse, multiple sport gear needs, who are rapidly diving into action sports and the sports culture lifestyle that surrounds them. As one of Nike ACG’s top athletes, Barrett was a natural choice for the namesake of an outdoor cross training shoe given her success as an elite snowboarding competitor, her strict training discipline as a Nike ACG athlete and as an exemplary female athlete in today’s exciting action sports industry.

Nike ACG’s introduction of the Air Barrett Christy marks a real milestone in the company’s future as the brand that takes Nike to the Outdoors and its commitment to the diverse and evolving needs of the action sports athlete. The Air Barrett Christy shoe line will be rolled out to retailers in the spring of 2001, and will include Nike ACG marketing and sales support designed to propel the outdoor retailer towards reaching an ever-growing female consumer base. Barrett’s shoe, designed with her as an inspiration by a female design and development team, promises to connect Nike ACG retailers and the Nike ACG brand with female athletes in a fresh and innovative way utilizing one of their most recognized athletes and action sports icons.

From the company who created Nike “Air” comes the shoe inspired by the “the big air queen” herself – the “Air Barrett Christy”. The shoe reflects Barrett’s own personality and training regime. Barrett is known for her daring snowboarding style and yet remains consistently on top of her sport. This versatile outdoor cross-training shoe goes from steep running trails to the street, with strength, style and attitude. “Barrett goes after it,” commented Kirk Richardson, business director for Nike ACG’s footwear division, “and so does her shoe. Our Nike ACG design team took to Barrett’s outdoor training ground, Vail, CO, and really designed this shoe around her active training schedule, and lifestyle demands. This shoe is going to be a standard for how outdoor cross training products are going to be designed moving forward.”

Part of what makes this shoe unique is the almost exclusively female creative team behind it, including the designer, and product development team. Female consumers are acutely aware of their needs in a shoe, they know what they like and this shoe promises to address those needs. To meet the demands of Barrett’s workout regime, designer, Nicole Mueller included a sticky rubber outsole for unsurpassed traction on dubious outdoor terrain, a midfoot nylon ribbed shank for extra torsional stability and a thermoplastic rubber medial and lateral wing in the forefoot for lateral stability. The versatile performance design is packed with Nike ACG performance technology yet lightweight enough for Barrett to throw in her backpack for a hike or a trail run after a hectic day on the road.

Like Barrett, the shoe is versatile, risk-taking and full of soul, design and appeal. When asked about the designing of her shoe, Barrett smiled, “I never forget that I recreate for a living. This shoe celebrates and personifies the outdoor lifestyle, it’s the perfect shoe for anyone who wants to do it all in one shoe.” Barrett’s design influence can also be seen in the color offerings of the shoe and in her own Nike ACG, Barrett Christy logo that will be integrated into the design. The colors and design of the shoe echo her signature snowboard graphics and combine the four elements – earth, fire, water and the one she knows best – “air”.

The shoe will be available at NikeTown and at select Nike ACG Retail partners starting February of 2000. Suggested retail price is a strong value at 70 dollars and the shoe will roll oout in four Barrett Christy inspired colors. Additional colors and “Air Barrett Christy” logo’d products are planned for future seasons.
