Mammoth Mountain, CA – The skiing and snowboarding worlds will join in Mammoth for two amazing, high-profile competitions the weekend of May 6-8. Mammoth’s Spring Fest will come to a roaring close as both industries’ top professionals compete for huge prizes. This year’s West Coast Invitational and Orage Masters are sure to put the Spring Fest party weekend down in the books as the best jam-packed party full of live music, on-snow action, pro competition and non-stop springtime fun.
West Coast Invitational
The West Coast Invitational returns for the fourth year with an impressive urban rail setup in the center plaza of The Village at Mammoth. Snowboarders come by invitation only to compete for a $10,000 cash purse under the night lights at the Village. Warm California spring air, an amped-up crowd, a live glam rock metal band and the best snowboarders in the world make WCI a truly unique experience that is gaining momentum each year as one of the best places to be in the spring.
Built by Mammoth’s own Unbound Terrain Park crew under the direction of Oren Tanzer, the structure will be over 90 feet long and over two stories tall. Spectators can stop by the Village all weekend long to watch as the structure is built.
The rail jam will feature snowboarding talents of Mark Frank Montoya, Eddie Wall, Simon Chamberlain, Danny Kass, Bjorn Leines, Matt Hammer and more in a one-hour jam session. The competition takes place on Saturday, May 7, beginning at 8:15 p.m. Other activities Saturday night in the Village will include a DJ starting at 6:30 p.m. and live music starting at 7.
The third annual Orage Masters will take place on the snow in front of Mammoth Mountain’s Main Lodge sundeck starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 7. The 2004 Orage Masters was voted the “Best Spring Party” by Freeskier Magazine. Mammoth’s Unbound Director, Oren Tanzer, along with input from head park builder Mike Gerstner and pro athletes, designed the course for a freeskier jam session exhibition format. Skiers representing Dynastar, Line, Armada, Rossignol, K2, 4FRNT, Solomon, and Volkl will challenge themselves on signature Unbound features including C-boxes, wedge boxes and rails. Teams will feature performances by pros such as JP Auclair, Tim Russell, TJ Schiller, Kristi Leskinen, Peter Olenick, Sarah Burke and more, who will compete for “dream prizes” that include a Yamaha snowmobile, 42″ inch Plasma Flat Screen TV, a Chrome Mini Chopper, and an Off-road Go Kart.
On Snow Festival
WCI’s on-snow festival will be full of cool stuff for those who want to demo new gear or pick up some sample products. Companies such as TransWorld Snowboarding, K2 Snowboards, Atomic, Mervin, Sol Sungard, Winterstick, Vans, Bataleon Snowboards, Armada, Ride, Line Skis and others will be set up all weekend, from Friday through Sunday, with everything ski and snowboard lovers need. The on-snow festival is free and open to the public.
The fun starts on Friday, May 6, at 2 p.m. with the WCI kick-off party and live music on the Main Lodge Sundeck. A live glam rock metal band will be on stage at the Village rail jam, and crazy WCI parties will take place throughout the entire weekend.
WCI attendees will also get to take advantage of Mammoth’s fabulous spring skiing conditions while enjoying the parties. With over 560 inches of snow this year – the most in the last ten years, this is the time to experience Mammoth’s legendary spring conditions and epic season.
