Vancouver, BC ¿ The world’s most established boardercross® snowboard racing series heads back to Sunshine Village for the second year on February 24-26. The Kokanee Boardercross® Grand Nationals will bring together some of the countries’ top pro riders racing for a $10,000 cash purse.
Now in its seventh season, the Kokanee Boardercross Grand Nationals is touring nationally through Alberta and Ontario, and back to BC for the series championships during the World Ski and Snowboard Festival in Whistler on April 19 – 21, 2000.
Since its inception in 1991, Boardercross has become the fastest growing snowboard discipline in Alberta and across North America.
“Boardercross is fast becoming ‘the event’ of snowboarding,” remarks Troy Edwards, Promotions Manager for Labatt Breweries, “No where is this more evident than the Banff region which is continually turning out great riders. We’re expecting close to 200 athletes to converge at the tough course set up at beautiful Sunshine Village in the heart of the great Canadian Rockies.” Truly a sport of the millennium, Boardercross was invented and developed on the West Coast. Boardercross features six riders racing concurrently down a course that features jumps, banked turns, tunnels and large moguls. It is the only competition in which Alpine (hard boot) riders compete against Freestyle (soft boot) riders.

This year’s competition features a new three-day race format and is open to all riders. Training and time trials are scheduled for Thursday and Friday respectively. The finals will take place on Saturday, February 26 with the top 48 men and top 24 women competing for the $10,000 cash purse.
Sunshine Village Boardercross event has attracted national sports coverage, is sanctioned by the Canadian Snowboard Federation (CSF), and will showcase live in concert Bif Naked at Wild Bills, Saturday, February 26th.
