Tignes (France). With the season’s first Halfpipe competition the opening of the 2000/2001 NOKIA Snowboard FIS World Cup continued today. With perfect weather all day Gian Simmen of Switzerland and Norwegian Stine Brun Kjeldaas took top honors.

The Halfpipe riders faced perfect weather conditions today on the Grande Motte glacier. Although it looked like the day would never end, the contest concluded just before the sun went down.

All three medallists from the 1998 Nagano Olympics were at the start today in Tignes but only the Olympic champion Gian Simmen from Switzerland managed to make it to the podium finally.

He was leading after the first run but extended his lead in the second when he also claimed the maximum points for amplitude. “It was fun competing today and I was stoked,” he said. “The weather was good – I expected it to be windy and foggy but when I woke up in the morning it was sunny so I was really motivated. The pipe here was pretty good, they’ve always used the same dragon, a super draggon, and that’s great. I’ve been here two summers ago for a camp and that was fun too. It’s always nice here.”

Japanese rider Kentaro Miyawaki finished second and was overwhelmed: “This was my second podium ever,” he said. “I’m so happy. Today’s competition was so much fun, especially with those beautiful conditions. It was different before but with all that sun it was just great. Despite the cold I therefore felt rather hot.”

Stefan Karlsson from Sweden come in third. “It was a good competition but it just took too long,” he said.

Olympic silver medallist Daniel Franck of Norway, who was in first place after the qualifications, crashed in both final runs and ended up in eleventh place.

US rider Ross Powers who had claimed the bronze at the Nagano Olympics did not make it to the finals and finished 18th.

Stine Brun Kjeldaas of Norway, Olympic silver medallist, was in fourth during the qualifications but won both the first and the second final run. “I’m really happy,” she said. “I didn’t know about my skills compared to the other girls. It was my first competition this season and the others were riding so well, so I’m stoked. The last couple of days the weather was horrable but it was just great today with all that sunshine we finally got a perfect competition and it was a lot of fun riding.”

Finland’s Minna Hesso crashed in the first run, but made it up in the second and claimed the silver medal ahead of French rider Doriane Vidal. “I was first after the qualifications where I was going really big, so I was quite confident,” Vidal said. “In the first final run I took a bit too much risk and made a mistake again in the second run so third place is fine for me.”

The Giant Slalom will conclude the event on Sunday.
