Grand Targhee Launches Mary’s Nipple Challenge
“The Summit to Save Second Base”
Breast Cancer Fundraiser to Support Oncology Fund at St. John’s Hospital
(Alta, WY – January 12, 2009) With some aptly named terrain providing a natural tie-in, Grand Targhee Resort is thrilled to announce the Mary’s Nipple Challenge <http://grandtarghee.com/the-resort/news-events/events.php?item=1297> , a new breast cancer fundraiser on Saturday January 31, 2009.
Participants will first gather sponsors, who will commit to either a flat sum or a “per vertical foot” donation. Sponsor forms are available at www.grandtarghee.com under EVENTS, on the Mary’s Nipple Challenge page. All funds raised will be donated to the St. John’s Hospital Oncology Fund and earmarked for breast cancer patients. The Oncology Fund offers financial assistance to cancer patients, helping cover costs of prostheses, travel costs associated with radiation treatments and housecleaning services for patients going through treatment.
The centerpiece event of the fundraiser is a timed lap challenge on Mary’s Nipple, with snowshoe and nordic events on the Nordic Track. Mary’s Nipple is an out-of-bounds peak with advanced intermediate terrain just outside the boundary of Grand Targhee Resort. Skiers and snowboarders will hike a 650 foot boot pack up to the peak of Mary’s Nipple, and ski or ride back down to the start of the hike to complete a lap. The complete loop is one mile in length. Participants will begin at noon on Saturday, January 31 and the last valid lap must be started by 3 pm at the beginning of the boot pack. The goal is to complete as many laps as possible in the three-hour timeframe.
Those interested in participating on less challenging terrain are invited to accumulate laps on our 15 kilometer Nordic Trail System on cross country or skate skis, or less rigorous snowshoe laps. The cross country lap will be a 5k loop, while the snowshoe lap will be a 2k loop.
An awards ceremony will take place in the main plaza at 4:30 pm, featuring special guests Annie Fenn MD and Maura Lofaro MD, who will discuss the importance of early detection of breast cancer. The ceremony will also feature local breast cancer survivors sharing their inspiring stories.
Pink CHAOS hats and Mary’s Nipple Challenge t-shirts will commemorate the event and be sold throughout the resort, with all proceeds going to the St. John’s Oncology Fund.
She Rips Weekend, a series of ladies-only alpine, snowboard, telemark and Nordic clinics will coincide with the Mary’s Nipple Fundraiser, offering the support and fun of an all-female learning environment on both Saturday and Sunday. The clinics offer discounted instruction, as well as deals on meals, drinks and spa treatments. For more information contact Ski and Snowboard School at 307-353-2300 x1352.
Participants may register as part of the She Rips weekend through Ski School, or on the morning of the event between 9:00 and 11:30 am on the main plaza. Downloadable sponsor forms are available under EVENTS, on the Mary’s Nipple Challenge page at www.grandtarghee.com. All sponsor money may be submitted to Andy Williams, Special Events Manager and must be received by Friday, February 6, 2009.
