According to an article on KCRA.com, “The California Senate today passed a bill that would require those under age 18 to wear helmets while skiing and snowboarding.” The bill, SB 880, still needs approval by the Assembly and Governor Schwarzenegger before it becomes a law. The bill would make it a crime punishable by a maximum of $25 if found guilty. Resorts would be responsible for communicating this law and it’s not clear whether the police would have to hit the slopes to enforce it. Can you imagine?

Criminalizing helmet non-use isn’t the answer. You only need to go as far as the California skateparks that are policed daily and where everyone, regardless of age, is issued a ticket and a fine (way more than 25 bucks) if they’re not in accordance with the helmet law. The kids start seeing the police as the enemy, they stop going to the skateparks, and then what?
