Whistler, BC—Blackcomb Mountain opened Saturday morning with “epic” snow according to hundreds of skiers and riders getting in their first turns of the season. Opening three weeks earlier than planned, with a base of 56 centimeters as measured at 1600 meters, drew lots of excitement and crowds were in line early Saturday morning waiting for the lifts to start turning. Blackcomb Mountain opening day visitor numbers were the best in over 10 years.
The first skier in line arrived at 11pm Friday night and camped overnight on a couple of chairs borrowed from Merlin’s patio. His buddies – all from Whistler High School – joined him at 3am. They earned the first chair up the mountain Saturday morning.
A long time Whistler local known for always being first in line on opening day, partially admitted defeat. “I got here at 6am and that was early enough,” he said. “These young guys are crazy… but I’ll still beat them to fresh tracks down the mountain once we’re up there.”
Snow continues to fall in Whistler and reached the valley floor early Monday morning turning the resort into a winter wonderland. Snowfall is expected to continue across the region this week, culminating in a heavy storm Thursday and Friday, which could bring 25 to 35 centimeters before the weekend.
