On January 26, we got the news that Legendary Banked Slalom, which is usually held early- to mid-February had been rescheduled from March 26–29. Shortly after we got an update from the Legendary Banked Slalom crew that the new dates conflicted with another event that wasn’t on the event calendar. This year is the 30th anniversary of the LBS, making it a huge milestone for the enduring event.
Now, the LBS has officially been rescheduled for March 19–22.
Here’s what the LBS crew had say about all the changes and the challenges they’ve faced this year.
After we set the original rescheduled dates of March 26-29 we were alerted to two major conflicting events; the JLA Memorial Banked Slalom in Mammoth and the Tom Sims Retro World Championships in Soda Springs. We also heard from many of the accommodations managers in Glacier that they were already fully booked that weekend due to the Splitboard Fest and Beacon Rally that was already scheduled at Mt. Baker Ski Area for that same weekend. This would have made it very challenging for Banked Slalom racers and spectators to reschedule their accommodations. Also, partying would have been more difficult due to Glacier restaurants and bars being booked for the NWAC fundraiser that is scheduled in conjunction with the backcountry awareness events that weekend.
The following weekend, April 2-5, conflicted with the USASA championships in Copper as well as Mt. Baker’s Golden Egg Hunt. Sounds a little crazy but the Egg Hunt is actually a huge event for us with an average of more than 1,500 adult participants and 900+ kids participating. To handle the scale of this event we already have every one of our volunteers scheduled for a full work day during the Egg Hunt which would have made running the Banked Slalom even more challenging.
We realize that unfortunately we will not be able to find the perfect dates for everyone. Regrettably, March 19-22 will overlap with two other Northwest-ish Banked Slaloms; the Neil Edgeworth Memorial at Big White and the Nate Chute Boardercross & Banked Slalom at Whitefish. To try to offset the effects of moving the Banked Slalom onto those event dates we are offering four guaranteed spots to the 2016 Mt. Baker Legendary Banked Slalom to both of those events to give away as prizes. We will also be providing links and information from our website to those events. Hopefully this will help boost their participation numbers and provide an alternative for riders who can’t make it to the Mt. Baker event.
