Volcom Doppler Pro Shell Jacket ($500)
Key Feature: Gore-Tex® 3 Layer Pro Shell Fabric and fully taped seams.
Pros: Alex says, “I rode this outerwear hard almost all season and it’s still as waterproof as the first day I rode in it.” In addition to the breathable Gore-Tex®, the Recco Avalanche Recovery System and Ziptech jacket-to-pant zipper are nice touches for deep pow shredding.
Cons: “The only downside is how thin it is—it’s definitely a shell and you want to get a little bigger size so you can layer up under it.” Alex adds that “with a thermal and maybe a sweater under it you’re good to go.”
Verdict: Alex tested this jacket all last winter, he says, “Living in the Northwest, we don’t get very many sunny nice days—it’s snowing and cold basically every day. I’ve worn this in blizzards and hiking jumps and it performs beautiful in both.” He adds, “With this jacket, you can outlast even the most hardcore of riders and be bone dry ’til last chair.”
