The Clubbies of Canterbury, New Zealand

Photography by Johnny McCormack

This southern hemi winter saw a change in the usual weather patterns in New Zealand.  While Wanaka and Queenstown were left cold, dry and crowded the snow just kept dumping a few hours up the road around the Club fields of Canterbury. The Clubbies as they’re known by the locals are small fields with no chair lifts, just rope tow’s that fire you up the hill once you attach your metal clip – nutcracker to the tow. You then have to hang onto the clamp of the nutcracker as your dragged through a series of pulleys. Making for a frightening ride up, but this keeps the punters away and the powder untracked.

There was so much snow on the road at Lyford, even after it opened we had to follow the grader as it cleared the way for us, we had to wait awhile along this stretch off the road. But that gave us time to eye up possible lines on the other side of the valley.
