Rider: Tyrel Thorton. Photo: Jeff Hawe.
“Last winter was one of change and growth for me. It ran a very different course than seasons past, and was very exciting. I did not start my winter until the beginning of February. I basically jumped from spending my days in the ocean, surfing, and warm tropical weather in the Southern Hemisphere. To spending my days wrestling my sled around in waist deep in powder. In the midst of one of the best winters in my recent memory, it was a mad scramble for me to get as much done as I could with what time I had left of the winter. I did a lot of branching out last winter, making new friends and working with crews that I had never worked with before. Hitting new locations, and learning a lot about the art of shooting snowboarding. While still keeping time to ride with all my good friends around MT, stoked! All said and done it was one of the best seasons of my life. This is a collection of moments I was able to capture last winter, hopefully it will give you a feeling of what my winter was. Here’s to another season of that caliber, bring on the snow.”
Thanks for looking,
Jeff

stop giving your photos away free, do you have any idea what kind of revenue tw generates from this website, it’s alot. Not to mention that tw is owned by bonnier which is a multi billion dollar corporation. Whats the world come to when the top publication in our industry doesn’t pay for editorial photos. Sorry, I’m sure it’s out of your hands, but it really grinds my gears.

I’m afraid of men with velcro gloves searching for sheep stuck in the fence.

seriously, hating on jeff hawe isn’t going to get much accomplished besides bumming out someone who still remembers why we do this year after year: because we love snowboarding (well at least he does). These are clearly his shots that didn’t get run this year, and they are still legit. Stay positive jeff, you’re one of the few people in the industry that is beyond the bullshit. Funny how the anonymity of the internet breeds assholes.

Agreed.

If TWS is willing to have these photos published on their website, then he deserves to be paid. Camera gear and travel is not cheap. Sure photography is a great job, but giving your work away for free ruins any chance at having professional contributors getting paid for content here.

i snowboard with carson’s little brother spencer sometimes.
both very good snowboarders repping Bend, OR.
check out NC productions video for this year called “Almost Dead”

whats up with the comments on here? cant you just enjoy these pictures instead of shitting from the mouth. oh and by the way, no one gives a fuck what you think about montana, generally speaking to anyone who said montana sucks.

Mitch, hopefully your naivety will pass with time. Yes, we all enoyed Jeff’s shots, but that’s not the point of all the “shitting from the mouth”. The point is, if TWS thought enough of Jeff’s shots to use them in this website, Jeff should have been paid.
Why should he be paid?
1) TWS is making money from the photos (if they aren’t, their business model is broken).
See all those adds on this page? Well, the advertising companies paid TWS to have them there, and generate revenue with each unique view (or some other similar scheme). The only reason the adds are there are because people come here to look at the photos. Plain and simple.
In the real world, people provide other people with services or products that help other people make money. These people charge a fee for the services and products they provide. People buy these services and products because they know that by using them to enhance their own product they will: not only recoup the money spent on the services or products, but also make a profit too. Basic business savvy. In this senario, the photographs are the product TWS uses to make money. To not pay for the product that brings in revenue is a win for TWS, but a loss to the photogs that put in the money, time, and effort to provide the product TWS uses to make money.
Which brings me to reason #2
2) Costs of producing a shot.
Jeff obviously wants to be a serious snowboard photographer, so he’s probably invested a lot of money into the camera body and glass that he uses. But those aren’t the only costs unfortunately. Car and camera insurance, gas, lift tickets/passes, food, and rent are all costs that need to be paid for. If you are shooting for the love of it, but with the goal to bag some covers etc, then you are by default putting a lot of money and effort into it. If the resulting photographs are good enough to be featured by TWS in *ANY* capacity, then the photographer should be paid for it.
I see absolutely no reason to give photos away for free to any for-profit business. Photo credit is no reason at all, BTW. After all, there are only two people who care about a photo credit, and we all know who they are, right?

So typical of people sitting on their coach to be critical of one of the coolest and most talented dudes i have ever met. And even better that people are critical of one of the most amazing shredable places in the US. Works for me though … stay out and leave it to homies like Jeff and the Bozeman crew.
