ESPN is proud to announce that the X Games and Winter X Games will feature equal prize money for both men and women in 2009. ESPN has been a leader in promoting and programming women’s athletics, and this recent action sports prize purse increase is the latest example. This past summer saw the X Games feature women’s motocross for the first time, and the upcoming Winter X Games will feature a host of female Olympic medalists from several different countries. Starting with Winter X Games 13 in January, 2009, men and women athletes at all X Games events will compete for equal cash awards.

Yea sweet. Chicks get paid to do 7’s and Guys have to do 10’s. That makes a lot of sense. Way to go espn

women should get paid equal amounts when they are hitting eqaully progressive tricks…..the end

maybe when girls is as competitive as mens than this would be legit. mens is way more competitive. give the extra money to the guys as they work harder for it. when the level of girls riding is as competitive as the guys that they should some money. Its not fair that girls can do two 5’s a 9 and 7 and win 20 grand. when guys are doing rodeos, 12’s back to back 10s … WTFFF

also when girls get paid more for being a good image rather than good style and skill thats, Fu*ked. you dont see looks influencing the guys sports. i mean is brad pit snowboarded, should he get paid more then everyone else cause hes good looking. HA f’ing girls industry is a joke. they should eliminate the girls category and and have them compete with the men. than well see who earns their money.

Wanna hear a joke?………..women’s rights
October 27th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
wow, there are some weak ass chauvinists on this page. women haven’t even had the opportunity to participate in the same activities as men for almost all of civilization. it hasn’t been until very recently, in historical terms, that females have even had the chance to see the athletic spotlight. their accomplishements, in many respects, are beyond that of the progression you see in mens snowboarding. BUT when some movement occurs, such as this, you protest it!? way to frown upon change. these girls deserve the money. can’t stand the x-games but word up to ESPN

Still, once I see a chick do a sw 180 back 3 off a handrail (seen done by many, many AMS), I will understand the equal pay. Even a more-than-third-of-the-way-grabbed five…

its equal because its harder to learn and do all those tricks in the kitchen.

You are the idiots who make people think that REAL snowboarders are jackasses. Take some responsibility and be a grown up! Make people have to think twice about calling a snowboarder a punk ass. I’ve been doing this since most of you were in diapers and you all ruin the image of MY sport! To all of you jackasses who are writing this stuff, go take up rollerblading or skiing!

Let it go already. More money might be more icentive to go bigger. Thay will be fighting for the big prize. Think of it this way. Your boss comes up to you and he’s like hey man, if you work a month of sats and learn how to do more around the shop Ill give you a 1-2 dollar and hr rase. Would you do it? I would. And dan you the man!

The only reason ESPN can do this is because it is a once-a-year contest. If it were a league they would make the pay relate to the drawing power (pro sports) or be forced to lower what the men receive (college sports - kinda, obviously not totally apt comparison).
It seems pretty weaksauce to me that the women (although I have a lot of respect for them) receive the same pay as the men when they ride at the level of low-end amatuers.
In the general workplace women should get paid the same for the same work. The same principle should apply here; women’s resumes in snowboarding don’t even compare to dudes.

Wow! This is what’s wrong with this country. Vote Obama O8!
October 29th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
you all are sexist bastards, i would like to see any of you put the work that girls do into a season or a film part or a competition… they work just as hard why not get paid just as much. respect the women if you ever want to end up with one… dumbasses
October 29th, 2008 at 1:41 pm
how about you all quit your bitchin and go ride your shredders. who the fuck care what ESPN wants to pay anyone. There are chicks that rip and guys that rip who cares give the ladies some cred.
October 29th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
your a piece of shit
October 29th, 2008 at 4:13 pm

WOMENS RIGHTS!!!!!!!!!
lolololololololzzzzzzzz

It’s a solid movement in the right direction, but you do have to ask yourself would ESPN support this structure for a league? And, they probably wouldn’t due to the likelihood of smaller audiences and fewer advertisers. But, maybe this is a sign of something bigger? X Game athletes are professionals independent of gender; women work just as hard to prepare for the season as men, don’t they deserve the same retribution to continue the progression of women’s sports?

Pretty sure “sw 180 back 3 off a handrail” isn’t even a real trick dude… And don’t be jealous just because Gretchen Bleiler has bigger balls than you. Don’t misunderstand me: I am a guy and understand how much harder it is to make it as a guy in this sport, just don’t talk shit on a topic you don’t know anything about.
