What do you get when you add 80 tons of snow, a few thousand riders, 90 degrees of summer heat, and Southern California’s Closest Winter Resort? The answer: One Hell of a good time at Mountain High’s second annual Buck Off party.
The event began at 5am with a fleet of trucks departing the North Hollywood Ice Company and heading to Wrightwood. After a short detour (IE getting lost) they arrived at Mountain High’s East Resort and the Faultline terrain crew began unloading the frozen goodness. More than 80 tons of blocked ice was run through giant chippers and sprayed into the jib arena. Enthusiasm grew by the minute, and by the time the snow was ready to ride, the crowd was ready to explode.
The course consisted of seven features and riders such as Scott Vine, Cory Whetstone, Kyle Lopiccolo, Zak Hale, Laurie Currier, and the infamous “LeNard tore them to shreds. If taking in the sun and snow wasn’t enough, there were plenty of other activities to keep participants busy that afternoon. A massive vendor village sat on the deck with some of the industries most recognized brands, Venison burgers char broiled on the grill, and, off in the distance, a live rail painting exhibition produced by frustr8.com took place. Steven Lopez and his crew put their artistic touches on six of Mountain High’s most popular rails and the finished products ended up being nothing short of incredible. The event wound up with a skateboard contest on the deck and live performances by Pensativa & Ferona Vei.
