Alex was recognized for his contributions to the sport of skiing throughout his life. In 1959, leading up to the Squaw Valley Olympics, Cushing was on the cover of Time Magazine and heralded as the pioneer of skiing in the U.S., and in 1999 he was inducted into the Ski Industry Hall of Fame. In an era of corporate dominance, Alex was the only original ski resort founder to maintain ownership of his resort. Today, Squaw Valley USA is the one remaining major ski area that is family-owned and operated.
From the placement of chairlifts to the mountaintop High Camp Bath & Tennis Club, there is a reflection of Alex’s unique style in everything that is Squaw Valley. From the beginning, Alex built the resort with the skier in mind. In doing so, he fostered a community of Squaw Valley loyalists. Lucky for us, Alex will be impossible to forget.
Squaw Valley USA is scheduled to open for skiing and riding on November 17, 2006. For more information on the Alex Cushing Memorial vi sit www.squaw.com.
