Denver, CO – October 31, 2002…The Halloween holiday brought plenty of treats in the form of snow to the high country in Colorado in the last 24 hours. Currently Loveland Ski Area is open and Copper Mountain will open this Saturday, Nov. 2. Also, the recent snowfall will allow Keystone to open next week, Nov. 8.
Winter Park and SolVista received 13 inches overnight. Crested Butte has received more than 30 inches of new snow already this season. Today Arapahoe Basin received nine inches of new snow, making the total for the month 45 inches. That 45 inches shatters the October record of 37 inches set in 1982. The Midway Base is 15 inches. Last year for October, November, and December, Arapahoe Basin had 53 inches putting the resort way ahead of last year’s pace.
Overnight at Aspen/Snowmass 13-inches/33 cm of snow fell with more snow in the forecast. Over the past three days 1.5 feet of snow has fallen adding to the already significant snow base from snowstorms throughout October and September. Nearly three feet of snow now blankets the upper slopes at Aspen/Snowmass.
Breckenridge is reporting 24 inches of snow at the summit in the last 24 hours adding to snow that has been falling since Monday. Vail and Beaver Creek are reporting 13 inches overnight at mid-mountain markers. Mountain operations crews at Vail cannot make it to the summit for measurement due to deep snow. Both resorts have surpassed the 19 inch settled base record set on Nov. 1, 1996. Beaver Creek is reporting a 25 inch settled natural snow base at the summit and Vail is reporting a 20 inch settled natural snow base at Mid-Vail. More than 14 inches of snow have fallen at Keystone in the last 24 hours. Snow measurements were taken by operations staff on the mountains this morning.
Colorado Ski Country’s snow report, which is updated twice daily on www.coloradoski.com, will commence with the first resort’s opening (coming soon) and the phone snow report, 303.825.SNOW, will begin in early November.
