Spring is in full effect! It seems like we’ve really only had one week of winter but the weather this past weekend sure was nice. It set a great stage for Planet Earth’s Shop Wars in the Alley Terrain Park for Nor-Cal shops to show their stuff.
Three categories for the contest:?
1. Big Air?
2. Quarter Pipe?
3. Rail
Winner takes all in the three categories for $1,000 in cash. In the Big Air comp’ it was a two-man battle between Boards n’ Motion’s Shane Reid and Porters’ Brandon Cocard. Shane was cabing it out with 5s and 10s. Brandon was showing a bag full of tricks with front 7s, back 7s, backside Rodeos and switch backside 9s all stomped to perfection with not even a hand drag or sketch.
In the QP no one really got they’re groove on until late into the jam. Kyle “Taquito Earl was throwing down huge backside Rodeos all during practice but couldn’t find his line until after the time 45-minute time limit was up. Porters’ Zak Shelhamer landed a nice frontside 9, but then was shown up immediately by Shane Fortier with his own version of a front 9 that was bigger and more corked.
In the Rail Jam it was a showdown between Sierra at Tahoe’s one-man squad Danny Rein and Porters’ Silas Stannard. I don’t even know how to explain the tricks that they were doing. Rail tricks have gotten so techy as of late I don’t know what to call the moves. But it was “captain tight pants Danny Rein in the end to take the cash defeating last years champ Silas.
The deliberations took quite a while. It seems like we were sitting around for an hour before we got the results. The toughest and most controversial finish was in the Big Air between Shane and Brandon … who should take it a cab 10 that was jerky or a smooth switch backside 9? This has been a debatable question even at pro level contests, but as history has already shown spin to win. Shane got the cash.
The top two teams got an invite to the Shop Wars finals at Windells in Oregon this summer. ?
1st Boards n Motion?
2nd Tie between Porters and Eastern Boarder
